The kid is alright

Looking back over the events of the other day, I’m coming to the conclusion that we’re way too paranoid as a society. And stupid.

Just because we once heard that some school nurse over there in some school (you know, you heard from ‘them’ about ‘that’ school over ‘there,’ didn’t you?), anyone who comes into contact with your child in a professional sense is legal bound not to do anything when they’re down on the ground clutching their throat gasping for air.

The nurse was not allowed to give him an anti-histamine for crying out loud. The counselors are not allowed to help them with sun-screen or insect repellant or help the younger ones get in or out of their bathing suits. I know there are childless folks who read this so I’ll spare you the gory details about what nursery school teachers aren’t allowed to do.

What is our reaction to a few well publicized cases of child molestation by child-care professionals? Not to raise the standards or increase the use of background checks. Not to pay them more so you just might attract a slightly higher level of candidates than the proverbial bottom of the barrel.

No, that would be obvious.

Instead we’ll just pass a few laws to make sure that they can’t do a damn thing so by golly, our KIDS ARE SAFE!

Breath easier citizens…. just don’t fly.
