If you don't want to pay $99 for the competitive upgrade to EE, pMachinePro at $45 is a good choice. It also has capchas to keep the bots out of your comments. MT-Blacklist must be working pretty well, because the amount of spam I've gotten is very small and by the sound of it, it's gotten pretty bad. So anyway, you might consider Movable Type. It's not real expensive and it's a pretty nice piece of software. But there must be WordPress solutions too...? I gave up similarly a year or so ago, and just started allowing comments again.
