Spirit Away this…..

The boy and me are curled up on the couch watching Spirited Away (Happy Hannukah) when the image on the screen starts pausing and shuddering (no other way to describe it).

And at the very bottom of the box in very small print it says “Dual-Layer Format: Layer transitions may trigger a slight pause. Some players may not be able to access all features.” Slight pause? That’s an understatement.

So what this means is that the DVD player I bought in 2000 is now obsolete? Or about to be?

Great.

I’m really getting old, aren’t I?

Nope, not you. It’s a common flaw with Disney DVD authoring conflicting with the firmware of certain brands of DVD players. Generally it’s Toshibas Disney doesn’t seem to play nice with. The authoring company may no longer test their playback on “older” machines. My Sony was bought in 99, back when these suckers were expensive, so don’t feel bad.

Disney bad. DVD good. I’m really sick of these soulless corporate flacks who have helped build a culture which totally devalues the creative process, and then whine when people don’t think there should be a cash value associated with their products. I’m also really sick of the enforcement strategy of treating everyone as a criminal. Bleah, a pox on all of their houses.
