thanking heaven

kids on the beach

Vacation at Grandma and Grandpa’s - January 2005

One of the silver linings in the clouds that were the events of last week - now I’m seriously forced to imagine a work / life scenario where I can earn my keep and still be around the kids. Something I’ve learned from blogging is that there is a whole world out there of people like my wife and I who don’t think it’s nuts that one or both parents might choose a path that keeps them closer to home. And there are folks who’ve managed to walk off of the corporate ladder and survived to tell the tale.

On the home front - big brother has been hovering around me all week, nervously watching the door to make sure I don’t make a break for it. And when I do run off to a coffee shop to get some real work done, he begs me to take him along. Big sister and little sister are similarly delighted to see me walk through the door at the end of their school day to bring them back home and make them mac and cheese. Trust me, there’s nothing so wonderful as two preschool girls happy to see their daddy. And my girls do a kick-ass ‘We love Daddy’ dance.

We’re working on a system with Wonder Sitter(tm) so she’s getting enough hours so that she doesn’t have to get a job at WalMart and I have enough time to do what I need to do.

So now we’ve managed to work out the kinks in the new situation, some work is starting to show up on the horizon and I just have to go out and get it. Easier said than done.

You have no idea how long it took me to realise I needed to ‘work to live’ instead of ‘live to work’. In that respect you were lucky to get your employer to push you in the right direction :) I wish mine would.
