savvy

There’s tech savvy and then there’s tech savvy. If you know what I mean. There are people who can get hits in the IT publications all easy-peasy and who still can’t figure out how to synch their smartphone to their computer. They’re tech savvy too, just in a different way.

Peter Giles, a local PR guru and very tech savvy guy, gave an excellent presentation at today’s meeting of the Westchester – Fairfield County PRSA on how to use the latest gadgets, gizmos and technology in a way that works and actually helps our clients.

The presentation can be downloaded here. It’s worth a read even if you already use Skype and know how to synch your TV remote to your smartphone.

On a related note, Steve Rubel is reporting that the New York Times is about to kill the Circuits section as a stand-alone section of the paper. I say it’s about time. Things like computers, mobile phones, WiFi and mp3 players have become such a part of our lives; they are like toasters, everyone has one and the only decision you have to make is if you want it to match the wall tiles or the counter top. Too often coverage of consumer technology focuses on the neat cool ginchy features and not on how the technology impacts our lives. Not that they Circuits section fell into that trap but too many of its competitors do. And there’s nothing more boring than an article comparing a red toaster to a blue one.
