Monday morning required reading

Hugh’s email interview with Seth Godin about his new book, All Marketers are Liars.

Well, we are, aren’t we?

A couple of weeks ago I was at a party, offering free marketing advice to the host who was trying to grow his business. I proposed Seth’s thesis – tell a great story and build a great brand without spending a dime more than you have to on advertising – much to the horror of an ad guy who was also at the party and offering his own free advice. His (the ad guy’s) big idea was ‘more 30 second spots.’ Spend more money. More money. And more money.

Side note – I live pretty close to where Seth lives and every now and then he makes a local reference in his blog – like this. Seth, if you are reading this…. I wonder if anyone can ever get Stew’s if you haven’t been to Stew’s.

More about Stew’s in an upcoming entry.

Worst Kept Secret

Yahoo! acquires Flickr and announces it on a blog.

Let’s hope they preserve the very flickrness of Flickr. I’d hate to see it turned into Flickr!

No More Love for Timbuk2

Dear Timbuk2 Warranty Department,

I tried, I really did. Two weeks ago I filled out the form on your web site (the one below the statement that says ‘We stand by our products’).

Since then I emailed twice to follow up.

I even called, during regular business hours but after a few minutes of voicemail hell I gave up.

Here’s the original problem – there’s some stitching coming loose around the handle of my Commute Bag. The one I carry around my PowerBook in. So as you could imagine, I’m not pleased that the $109 bag that I bought only a year ago to carry around my PowerBook and what nots is coming apart.

Here’s the bigger problem. I really liked the bag. I loved the way my PowerBook slid right into the sleeve, the way all my gadgets and cables and even a couple of magazines, a book or two and a moleskine all fit nice and snug. I even accosted someone at a conference who was also toting their laptop around in a Timbuk2 to compare notes.

That’s all over now. You’ve ignored me after claiming you stand by your products. Not a very nice way to treat a customer especially after all the nice claims on your web site (no, I’m not giving you any link lube) about how well built your bags are.

I’m in the market for a new bag for my PowerBook and if anyone wants a recommendation on a certain laptop bag to avoid like the plague, you know where to find me.

The Evolution of iPodder

iPodder 2 is out!

And the best new feature of all is a ‘Cleanup’ interface to delete all those files that seem to pile up but you can’t keep track of. I’m happy to say I deleted two gigs worth of stuff I’ve already listened to but didn’t realize was still sitting on my hard drive.

Download… install…. plug in and enjoy!

Shoe on the other foot

I’ve spent the better part of the past ten years second guessing clients after they presumably failed to take my advice when speaking with a reporter.

Yesterday, I got a taste of my own medicine and may I now say to all of my former and current clients… I feel your pain and awkwardness.

I was interviewed for a podcast and adding up the ten minutes of the interview itself and the 50 or so minutes of nagging nerves and self-doubt beforehand and you have one of the most nerve-wracking hours of my life.

And no, I’m not ready to share the link. Just yet.

But now I know the value of being prepared with questions and answers written out beforehand. In very large type.
