What the American Girls phenomenon best represents, though, is the fact that fathers and mothers, even if they do not consider themselves social conservatives, want help in keeping at bay certain aspects of the pop culture. And they want help they can buy.
I’m about halfway through this article on the American Girl phenomena.
I’m no expert in the theories and psycho-analytical stuff going on there, all I know is they are very expensive and (in theory) good role models for my daughters.
But as the father of two three year old girls, I know that American Girl employes the best viral marketing experts in the whole of market-dom, my pre-teen nieces who insist on teaching my daughters everything they’ll need to ask Daddy to buy for them when they move from the Bitty Babies to the full grown versions.
Damn you Mattel!!!
