Happy to announce

Bbm Podcast NetworkWay back last November, when we were first hearing about such new and exciting things, I started to get on Dave Hamilton about podcasting. Back then we didn’t know if podcasting was, in the immortal words of Bruno Kirby’s limo driver in This is Spinal Tap “just a fad” or if we were on to something.

Turns out we were. Dave and fellow Mac Observer-ite John F. Braun started the Mac Observer’s Mac Geek Gab Podcast last spring and it quickly moved up into the top tier of podcasts.

So it would seem a natural fit that the BackBeat Media business model – supporting web publishers on the advertising and business side, could be applied to podcasters and podcasting. That Dave and Greg would seek green pastures in the fields of podcasting….

If you guessed ’sure David, that makes sense,’ you’re right.

So today we’re happy, pleased and delighted to announce the launch of BackBeat Media’s Podcast Network. Joining the aforementioned Mac Geek Gab are Brian Ibbott’s Coverville and Dave Slusher’s Evil Genius Chronicles.

Just like with the existing members of the BackBeat Media network, this is not about control, content or creativity. It’s about supporting independent publishers and podcasters with advertising and business support so they can go and do what they really want to do. Dave Slusher expresses this thought more clearly than I could here.

We’ll have more to say on this throughout the day. So stay tuned.

Update: BusinessWeek talks about the rise of podcast networks, mentions us and quotes Brian Ibbott.

Update 2: Dave Hamilton tells all.

Update 3: more coverage.

Update 4: TechCrunch chimes in.

Update 5: a mention from Corante

Yawn

Sorry, but I can’t be bothered to get all huffy over the Steve Rubel Call to Action that may or may not be excluding all but the big and mid-sized PR agencies.

You can follow the whole thing on Memeorandum.

The whole pissfight is a mountain out of a molehill, as is the subject.

I’m inclined to agree with B.L. Ochman who rightly points out that we aren’t going to find any rouge creative types in the larger agencies anyway. Trevor Cook makes the same point – the big agencies “just see social media as another product line.”

That economic model has seen its day. Any window dressing in the form of blogging or participatory media practices is only going to delay the inevitable. Or like putting a dress on a pig, to mix a metaphor.

Bonus link: Jeremy Pepper chimes in with a spirited arguement in favor of the small agencies and sole practitioners being at the forefront.

Hello Google Analytic Users

Google chose Thanksgiving morning to issue a mea culpa for the fiasco that is Google Analytics.

They must have learned that trick from the White House – put all bad news out on a slow news day. Can’t say I blame them when they have to tell me this:

While we increase capacity, you may see longer than normal delays in data showing up in your reports. All data continues to be collected and no data has been lost.

Well, you get what you pay for.

Speaking of turkeys….

It came from Planet Blog

Sony might think a handful of bloggers are hardly worth its attention, but now the story has made it to the pages of BusinessWeek.

And now it’s one day before the start of the Holiday shopping orgy / season.

Great timing guys!

Techdirt has some thoughts on the impact of all this – not only on Sony’s sales but on the artists who are seeing their sales plummet.
