Defining one’s self

Mary Hodder takes issue with Intelliseek’s use of the word ‘consumers’ to describe well… us blogging folks.

From the Intelliseek release:

Intelliseek’s research also finds important correlations between consumers who regularly skip over or delete television or online ads and those who shape, create, and absorb consumer-generated media (defined as experiences, opinions and advice posted on the Internet by consumers for others to read and share).   “Active ad skippers,” for example, are 25 percent more likely to create and respond to CGM on Internet message boards, forums and blogs.

My own two cents, I hate the word consumer as it would apply to me or anyone I know. A consumer is someone who watches the SuperBowl and talks about the commercials at work the next day. A consumer is someone who watches commercials.

In our house we skip over them.

I like amateur – a word Mary defines as those who ‘lovingly create media.’ I’m an amateur radio operator (a Ham), an amateur photographer, and (I guess) an amateur writer. Unless of course you all start clicking those boxes on the right.

One phrase I absolutely detest is ‘citizen journalist.’ The word ‘citizen’ should be used in association with doing something for your community, not snapping pictures of someone’s Ferrari parked in the handicapped spot and uploading it to Flickr. I’m a citizen when I go to vote and when I write cranky letters to my congressperson. Here I’m just a cranky person. And a journalist is someone who went to school and / or is paid for it. A Blogger account does not make anyone a journalist anymore than a bat and glove makes them Derek Jeter.

  • AMEN, brother. "Citizen Journalist" sucks. People get excited over the prospect of taking down the next Dan Rather, but that's horseshit "now a days."

This medium has been blown wide open and them days are over. The MSM is on to blogs and won't willingly let something like RatherGate happen again.

Trust me...the "citizen journalist" term is going the way of "ciizens arrest" in short order.

  • Well, I admit I use the term citizen marketing and citizen journalist when tagging posts, but I'm not really sold on the idea.

However, I do like to play citizen doctor sometimes, but that's for special people.
