Not in Kansas anymore

Everytime I’m out here in the Bay Area I’m struck by the differences in knowledge and attitude towards social media between here and where I’m coming from. It’s not just that people in Westchester County don’t know what tagging is, it’s that it’s not even something that they would ever possibly want to know about. Sure there’s plenty of people who are “using” RSS but the fact that they have no idea what it is, should that matter?

An anecdote: Last month our town has gained itself what’s politely called a paroled sexual offender. A meeting was called at the school and the Chief of Police of our nice safe exurban town, an otherwise nice smart man who smiles at small children when he’s at the local chat and chew, went off on a long tangent about Internet safety and how we should all keep our kids off of MySpace.

So what do you think was the reaction from the assembled parents?

If you guessed it was a room full of puzzled looks and a few parents who came up to me afterwards cause they figured I know this stuff and might explain to them what MySpace is, you guessed right.
