Fly the unfriendly skies of Delta

logo-1.gifjetBlue CEO David Neeleman was all over the news this morning apologizing to the passengers stranded on planes at JFK during Tuesday’s snowstorm. Most importantly he was taking responsibility.

Meanwhile, yesterday I dropped Mrs. Marketing Begins At Home and the Boy Genius at the Delta terminal at JFK for the flight to Paris. The flight that was scheduled to leave at 6:45 PM but didn’t leave until 1:00 AM this morning. The terminal that was filled to the rafters with panicked travelers, snaking lines and surley staff. We actually saw Delta staff yelling at confused passengers who could barely speak English.

For Delta this is probably a regular experience so I won’t expect an apology for my wife and son or for the poor foreign visitors who missed their flights home.

So there in a nutshell you have it. Why I only fly jetBlue.

Au Contraire! The Air France staff could not have been more pleasant and their plane, compared to the tattered old plane (with no t.v.'s!) Delta provided us with after making us wait for 7 hours, was delightful.
  • What a bad experience!

Delta will never be a Virgin, I am sure, but it is one of my favorite airlines (as opposed, say, to United or Northwest). They've delayed me a few times, lost my bags once, and even bumped me once, but the staff have always been polite and helpful (albeit harried).

As recently as December, their check-in agent turned a very blind eye to my family's overweight baggage: "Are you a Medallion member, sir?" "To be honest...no. I was Gold in the late 90s, but..." "Great! Great! No problem, I'll just tag these.... there you go... enjoy your flight!"

Granted, Delta is much friendlier in the Southeast than it is anywhere else...

In fact, I'd say Delta's biggest problem is their codesharing with AirFrance... now, those are some mean, pissed off people.
