New toy alert

Since my contract with Verizon was up, it was time to either stick with the slavemasters or move to a new provider. So yesterday I waltzed over the the Cingular store in Stamford and picked up a shiny new Blackberry Pearl. I got a one year contract cause I figure by then the iPhone will have all the kinks worked out and I can get me one of those without fear.

I’ve already set myself up with the Opera Mini-Browser and all the Google mobile apps. If anyone can recommend a decent mobile RSS reader, I’d be greatly appreciative.

UPDATE: On the advice of Dave and Josh I’ve downloaded the Newsgator Go! mobile RSS reader but I can’t get the darn thing to work. I download and install alright but when I try to open it I get a message that the ‘module NewsGator20_en_16×16 does not match codfile timestamp of sibling module NewsGator20_en_1×16-1.’

If anyone out there has any clever suggestions, I’d appreciate it.

  • Congrats on the toy!

After our pre-purchase conversation yesterday, I found myself researching the same thing last night. It actually looks great (though I couldn't find one of those whiz-bang, online demos of it), but I kept coming across one issue: e-mail support. Near as I can tell, the Pearl (and perhaps all Blackberrys?) don't fully support IMAP. Having used Chatter on my Treo 650 for the last 18 months (and having the wonderful experience of a truly single/fully-synced inbox, regardless of what device I use to check my mail, Treo, computer, etc), I was horrified to read that the Blackberry doesn't really do IMAP.

Can you (or someone) confirm/deny this?
  • Dave I just downloaded NewsGator GO RSS reader. It's slick because it syncs with my desktop reader, NetNewsWire.
  • You should also try FreeRange NewsReader, which you can download from the Blackberry Help bookmark. It's fast and works offline, storing articles on the phone so you can read them when you don't have a connection. It also supports things like Flickr feeds, so you can get images directly on your Blackberry.
