The House That Ruth Built

His first Yankees game

His first Yankees game

Global brands are funny things. You can go halfway around the world and see some kid in some backwater town wearing a Yankees jersey sipping from a Coke bottle. It happened to me ten years ago in some tiny coastal town in the south of France. The kid didn’t speak a word of English but I’m sure if he did, he probably didn’t have any idea who Don Mattingly was.

So today I took the Boy Genius to his first Yankees game. And just like my dad took me to my first game in the old Stadium in the last year before they tore it down, this is his first trip to the Renovated House that Ruth Built in its Final Season ™.

Global brands sneak up on you. Boys who grow up within 50 miles of The Bronx know who Derek Jeter is before they even know what he does. And the first thing Jeremy pointed out to me was That Guy With The Number 2 On His Back … Isn’t He That Derek Jeter Guy? Hey, Is Derek Jeter Batting? Did Derek Jeter Just Get That Hit?

I swear the kid has never seen a game before in his life.

Global brands hit you when you are asleep and sneak into your dreams. And the Boy is sleeping now, dreaming of camp on Monday when he can wear his #2 shirt and tell all his friends that he saw Derek Jeter play ball.

Parents really shouldn’t push their religions on kids so early. :)
