It’s been a full day at BlogOrlando.
Being the first session has its pluses and minuses. Getting it over first thing means I can sit through other sessions actually paying attention to what’s being said instead of fretting about my presentation. On the other hand, I’m beat.
My session went pretty well. There were some teachers in the room and I was pretty happy to see them nod in agreement (instead of stoning me) when I observed that schools today are doing a great job of preparing our kids for the jobs of the mid-20th century. And of course having Judson Collier and several other Real Live Teenagers and Young Adults in the room added a great deal of needed perspective. There was a lot of discussion of how class and income inequities play into this, school budgets and whether or not we should just let kids be kids. I ended the day by saying we should always push our children to experience the real but if we can’t, a computerized simulation can work pretty well.
I spend the rest of today attending sessions in the tech and community tracks. Jake McGee led a great session on identity, following on his equally great keynote on how Lego embraced (kicking and screaming all the way) the Cluetrain. I also found Eric Marden’s session on CSS and WordPress to be very informative. It’s nice to know I’m not the only person who gets tripped up on selectors.
Now I’m listening to Josh talk about using Flickr. In a few hours, the happy hour beckons. Then tomorrow we’re all heading out to Disney Animal Adventure with John Frost, author of the Disney Blog.
And then home. Sweet home.
