More Proof That Apple Is Eating Your Lunch

Having dinner in an Italian restaurant in Boston. The waiter notices my iPhone and asks me if I’m looking forward to Apple’s iPhone 3.0 announcement scheduled for Tuesday.

Is there any other technology company (or any company for that matter) who’s routine product announcements are treated with such a sense of anticipation and wonder by the public at large?

  • Seriously, though. AS far as technology goes, absolutely. I think there are a few other items / brands I own that do get attention in this type of situation, but nothing like my iPhone does. I've had security guards at Yankee Stadium ask to check it out while I'm going through security, people on airplanes regularly comment on it, and we could go on.

That said, a friend at a creative shop told me, after it was suggested that her company create an iPhone app for a client, that those users should "get real phones" and so forth. Unfortunately, said shortsighted developer doesn't have any understanding of the purchasing / usage habits of iPhone users vs. all other handsets, probably combined.
