The Final Frontier

I took the Boy Genius to see the new Star Trek last night. I’ve been a fan since watching repeats on WPIX 11 every day at 6pm back in my late elementary school days.

For me, the first few movies and early seasons of TNG showed promise, but somewhere around Generations and Voyager, Star Trek ceased to be about the joy and wonder of exploration and instead became a dead horse for a studio to beat whatever money remained in the old franchise.

This movie wiped all that bad taste away and brought the franchise back to where it was when Kirk was fighting Khan and I was still in High School. So thank you J.J. Abrams for giving us back our Star Trek and for preserving it anew for our children. I’m looking forward to many more adventures with this new cast and sharing them with my kids.

The Boy Genius had only ever seen ‘The Trouble With Tribbles‘ but he had no problem at all getting into the story. He even grasped the ‘alternate reality / timeline’ thing.

This is a great time to be a fan of geeky science fiction and fantasy. After the disappointment that was the Star Wars prequels, we got The Lord of the Rings, Battlestar Galactica, Doctor Who and now a new and rejuvenated Star Trek.

And finally let me be the four millionth person to embed this video:
