How To Market In A Recession – Have A Sense Of Humor

Mohegan Sun, the native-American mega-casino in Connecticut is taking an interesting tact in their marketing efforts.

a recession theme-aimed squarely at a new breed of customer: the budget-conscious high roller. The minimum bet at the black jack table has been dropped to just five bucks. Half- and even quarter-cent slot machines have hit the gaming floor, too. Meanwhile, the Sun is hoping to recapture some of the fast-disappearing expense-account trade with its “Business Bail Out” program, which includes free gaming lessons for corporate clients.

I like this. You’ve got to hand it to the marketing folks for having the guts to go with reality in place of the fantasy that most casinos try to sell.

Social Media Club New York

DSC_0011, originally uploaded by david parmet.
I had the honor of being one of the speakers at last night’s gathering of the Social Media Club’s New York chapter. 50 or so marketing and social media types gathered in the offices of For Your Imagination and heard  Jay Bryant and me talk about all things social media and marketing.
We talked a lot about the dos and the don’ts, about how the Obama Campaign has raised the bar for using social media tools and about how the recession is impacting budgets and the use of social media.
I honestly haven’t been able to make a lot of the SMC’s meetings in New York but I’m going to try to make more in 2009.

More Sustainable Living Than Ever

Hereford Steer

After reading Mark Bittman’s latest – Food Matters – Sue has put us all on a steady diet of Bulgar wheat and organic spinach.

Just kidding, the Bulgar wheat is pretty good and the spinach adds some much needed texture.

But seriously, the whole exercise, along with the garden and other steps towards eating better, has us thinking about our impact on the Planet. According to Bittman, “serving a typical family-of-four steak dinner is the rough equivalent of driving around in an SUV for three hours while leaving all the lights on at home.” And even if all the cows destined for the table were grass fed organic, there still wouldn’t be enough room on the planet for all that grass.

Yes folks, something has to give.

I’m really enjoying our new dining habits. It’s a blast to fill the kitchen with things I never saw or heard of growing up (leaks? what the hell are leaks?) and the chopping and slicing and cooking is something the whole family can join in. The food is great and I feel great and I really love the expression on the kids faces right before they taste it and realize it isn’t so bad after all.

Just finished watching the season premier of Battlestar Galactica and my mind is totally fraked .

Speaking of four letter words, someone at KFC is either the gutsiest marketing genius of all time, or the dumbest.

Update: I’m currently the number one hit on Google for KFC Frak Pack. That can’t be good.
