Anyone who’s been paying attention to this space knows that among my other obsessions, local government / politics and how technology has an impact have been an ongoing theme here. In addition to being a candidate myself, I’m Webmaster of the Pound Ridge Democratic Committee, and I put together social media strategies for another Town Board race. I’ve also worked on Take19 – a group blog which helped elect our very own John Hall to Congress in 2006.

On Sunday, at SXSW, I’ll be joining Advomatic’s Julie Blitzer in a conversation about Web2.0, technology and local campaigns. We are calling the session “Not Just for Obama” because we both believe from our own experiences that the aggressive use of cutting edge social media tools has a place in the most local of political races and movements.

I’m going to talk about how campaigns have changed from the good old days of smoke filled party clubhouses to today’s iPhone empowered field teams. I’m also going to highlight a few great examples from my own experience here in New York State – movements and organizations using the Web to create change in their own backyards. Julie will talk about the technologies themselves and how they are being used.

I’m a bit late to all the SXSW panel picker self promotion this year, but that doesn’t mean I’m trying for my third trip back to Austin. This year I have two panels up for your kind consideration. Both are a bit of a change for me.

Jocks Online: the Future of Sports Fandom came about from my work with NBC Sports and the USOC on the upcoming Winter Olympic Games. We’ll be covering everything from how bloggers are making the back pages irrelevant to how minor league and amateur athletes are leveling the playing field (pun intended) with big league athletes.

Not Just For Obama: New Media Gets Local was inspired by my involvement in local politics here in Pound Ridge, both as a candidate and as an activist. Noel Hidalgo put me in touch with Julie Blitzer of Advomatic and this panel was born. We’ll be covering how social media tools are being used at the local level.

Furthering my self-improvement by learning PHP experiment, I’ve tinkered a bit more with SimplePie. It took me about an hour to  whip together Metro-North Bloggers, a collection of feeds from bloggers in Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Duchess and Fairfield Counties – AKA, the northern New York suburbs.

In digging around for feeds, I’ve found there are a whole lot more bloggers in the area than I initially suspected. Hopefully some of my newly found blogging friends will add their feeds.

Next steps are offering the ability to subscribe to individual feeds, or the the whole shebang. I’d also like to color the headlines in the color of each Metro-North line, i.e., blue for someone who lives on the Harlem line, red for the New Haven line, etc.

A more ambitious goal is a means of auto-submission of feeds so I don’t have to manually add each new feed to the script that generates the page.

I had already been blogging for a couple of years at another location but the convergance of media, marketing, public relations and social media was too tempting a target so I abadoned my career as a daddy blogger and (if I’m not mistaken) I became PR blogger number 140-something.

Back then you could count all the significant marketing bloggers on your hands and toes. Now … well you know.
