We’ve been to the museum before and have seen special exhibits there but have never been prevented from taking pictures before. It seems that Narnia is now a wholly owned subsidiary of the Walt Disney Company and having your picture taken by Daddy while sitting on the throne of Ice Queen Jadis is no longer considered a child’s introduction to the magic of C. S. Lewis’s allegorical retelling of Christian mythology, but a copyright violation.
But that’s Disney’s m.o. Take a story that’s been told and retold for generations, add some talking squirrels or dwarfs and it’s no longer in the public domain but a product to be packaged and sold.
I’ll be speaking on using social media in the overall marketing mix at the next meeting of the Social Media Club New York. The event is on the evening of January 22 and you can sign up here.
For my upcoming session at BlogOrlando:
How is the Internet and Social Media changing education? From self-directed curriculum to opportunities for collaborative learning across global borders, the Internet has brought new options for learning to the classroom and beyond. Still there are concerns that the Internet is exposing school-aged children to a wider world they may not be ready for, and that it is denying children the opportunity for real hands-on learning, replacing real experiences with simulations. In addition, concerns about childhood obesity related to inactivity have been raised.
This session will not attempt to answer these questions, rather it will be a discussion about them. We will discuss what is going on in different districts and what individual school children are doing. We will compare our own experiences as parents, as educators and as learners.
Blog Orlando is a no-questions asked must attend for the social media marketing blogochatosphere. Josh never fails to put together a fantastic line up of interesting people and experts from every walk of life and profession.
This year’s BlogOrlando is scheduled for September 25 – 27.
This year, I’m doing something a bit different. I told Josh I’d love to talk but I felt the “Blogging Meets Marketing” meme was a bit tired, at least for me. It was time for me to let others speak on the subject. So this year I’ll be leading a discussion on how social media is impacting education. Given my interest and experience in the topic as a homeschooling parent, this is a topic I’ve wanted to explore for a while. So I’m looking forward to learning more myself as September approaches.
Next Tuesday I’m speaking at the Airports Council International – North American Marketing and Communications Forum. I was invited to speak by Benet Wilson of Aviation Week – someone I keep running into at various social media conferences, so she must know her stuff!
Ironically I’m making the drive – all the way from my home in Pound Ridge, NY to Pittsburgh, PA. What can I say, I love driving through Pennsylvania.
I thought long and hard about what I would tell the assembled airport marketing managers. Clearly they are in a tough spot – between the needs of passengers and the requirements of security. And if the weather shifts, guess who gets the blame?
So I’m going to forgoe my usual history of social media and get right to the point. The decision to fly into one airport or another can be just as easily impacted by convenience as it could be by something someone read on Twitter or a travellers forum. It’s very easy to find out if one airport has better parking, quicker check in, nicer dining choices or a parking garage that is a bus ride and a load of hassles away from the terminal. And it’s just as easy for airport marketing managers to read what’s being said about their properties on the Internet as it is for you or me.
The hardest part of social media is learning to listen. But it’s often the most important thing you can do.
