So you’re calling bullshit…

Josh has called out the fakers, the frauds and the fools in our industry. Especially those who present themselves as experts when their experience is inch deep and not much wider.

Many times recently I’ve been sitting in conferences listening to ‘experts’ talk about various subjects. I’ve always said my definition of expert, especially when it comes to social media, is loosely defined as ‘a few years ahead of you on the learning curve’. It’s funny though that these experts were asking ‘what is social media?’ just a short time ago.

So what do we do, as an industry, about the so-called experts?

For one thing, stop paying to go to conferences that are serving up these experts. And stop patronizing the sponsors of these conferences.

On the subject of conference sponsors, let’s reward those who are putting on quality programs. Let me plug the Society for New Communications Research’s Annual Research Symposium and Awards Gala in Boston next month. If you are reading this and interested in the Future of Our Industry(tm) you better plan on attending.

And what about the individual speakers and experts who give out advice like “add content to your company’s Wikipedia entry?”  How about naming names? Let’s use our collective Google-juice and make sure the permanent record is corrected.

That’s a start. Let a thousand flowers bloom in the comment section and throughout the marketing-blogosphere.

Webkinz are now a legitimate discussion topic at social media conferences (and unconferences).

Where I’m at

I’ll be participating in a panel on “Blogs, Vlogs & iPods: Best practices for implementing and leveraging social media in PR campaigns” at the PRSA’s T3 PR Conference on June 19 in New York City. Details are here. I’m looking forward to sharing the stage with Chip Griffin.

July 12 and 13 I’ll be at Blog Philadelphia. I’m leading a session entitled “Web 2.0 without a textbook” which gives me way much leaway on where I can go with it ;-) . As an added bonus to those of you attending BP, I’m bringing the Boy Genius. He’ll be lining up interviews for his debut podcast. So be prepared!

Pure genius

Mike’s been attending too many blogging conferences lately….

Yes indeed you’re smart, smart enough to know you’re in over your head, and that’s exactly when you retreat, master of deflection.

After all, why waste time preparing a speech when you could simply waste time asking and entertaining random off-topic questions from the audience.

Does this sound like anyone we know?

Finally, a blogging conference I don’t have to fly out to San Francisco to attend!

This is turning out to be quite a conference with a steller cast of characters. In addition to myself, you’ll hear from Dave Pogue, Mike Dunn and other luminaries on how blogs, podcasts and other forms of social media are impacting the world of marketing. Our audience is primarily the marketing folks from the Westchester and Fairfield business community – everything from small start-ups right up to the Fortune 500 companies based in the area. In other words, not your usual suspects.

If you are in Stamford, or anywhere between New York and New Haven and have any interest in blogging and social media and how it will impact your businesses (or already impacts..) I hope to see you at the Stamford Marriott on June 13.

Valorie Luther of Creative Concepts, who’s behind all of this, has the details.
