Key Notes

GaryVee channels Henry Rollins

GaryVee channels Henry Rollins

An action packed line-up of keynoters this afternoon.

First off, Fred Wilson gave us a nostalgic tour of Silicon Alley, past and present. I’ll take exception to one of Fred’s points. Fred wants to drop the ‘Alley’ moniker – we’re more than an alley, we’re a whole city he says. I say we take it further – we’re a whole region. Let’s include the LIRR, MetroNorth and Jersey Transit folks. There’s a lot going on up here.

Next up, Deb Schultz gave us poetry on the Grand Gesture and the Continuem. I mean poetry people! I’ll be mulling this one over for a while. Seriously. Deb always seems to be one step ahead of the rest of us – it’s not fair to call her a marketer, she’s way beyond that.

Jason Fried of 37 Signals was up next. I got a little taste of Jason’s view of the world from David Hansoon earlier. I tweeted some quotes from Jason’s talk – folk like me in marketing who deal with software companies should be taking note and applying it to how we deal with our clients. Sometimes we have to teach them the meaning of no.

Maria Thomas of Etsy spoke a bit too much about Etsy for my tastes. I would liked to have heard a bit more about how Etsy fits into the whole DIY movement. I think this is a significant movement on the Web; the resurgance of old-school crafts and artisanship along the Long Tail.

Last up, but certainly not least, was Gary Vaynerchuk. He was full-on Gary. What else can I say?
