Tap Across The Tappan Zee

DSC_0095, originally uploaded by david parmet.

After living in the Hudson Valley for most of my adult life, I think I’ve finally found a super secret spot to take decent pictures of the Tappan Zee Bridge.

For Narnia

DSC_0027, originally uploaded by david parmet.

The Boy Genius and I took the trip down to Philadelphia to see the Narnia exhibit at the Franklin Institute. Upon entering the exhibit you are told in no uncertain terms that what you are about to see is the property of the Disney World Empire and photography will be punished by expulsion from Narnia.

We’ve been to the museum before and have seen special exhibits there but have never been prevented from taking pictures before. It seems that Narnia is now a wholly owned subsidiary of the Walt Disney Company and having your picture taken by Daddy while sitting on the throne of Ice Queen Jadis is no longer considered a child’s introduction to the magic of C. S. Lewis’s allegorical retelling of Christian mythology, but a copyright violation.

But that’s Disney’s m.o. Take a story that’s been told and retold for generations, add some talking squirrels or dwarfs and it’s no longer in the public domain but a product to be packaged and sold.

No Photography Allowed

photo.jpg, originally uploaded by david parmet.

I took the Twin Princess Number One to Dia:Beacon this afternoon.

Photography is strictly prohibited, which kind of sucks since this is such an amazing space. There’s a ton of huge, monumental works lit by natural light. And of course you are right smack in the middle of the Hudson Highlands, some of the most beautiful real estate this side of the South of France.

So I managed to sneak this one off with my iPhone.

At The Aldrich

Aldrich Museum

Thomas Hawk complains (rightfully so) that museums in San Francisco have issues with photographers.

Here in the North East I’ve never had such a problem in any museum I’ve visited. And in some of the smaller museums, like the Aldrich in Ridgefield, CT, they’ll even go out of their way to point out what’s interesting, new and exciting. And they are kid-friendly, to a fault.

Must be a cultural thing.

Update: 10 Zen Monkeys has a decent rundown of the Thomas Hawk / SF MOMA incident and aftermath. It’s amazing to me (well, maybe not) how quickly they throw in the ‘pervert’ accusation. That’s the last bastion of someone who has nothing else to accuse someone with.

And the rest of the sheeple just go blindly on ….

Working photographer

20071113_0159, originally uploaded by david parmet.

I’m starting to reach the proverbial tipping point where I’m being invited to events with the unspoken understanding that I’ll take pictures and put them up on Flickr.

Actually, not always unspoken.

Which is nice. It’s nice to be recognized for contributing to the community.

Of course if you have an event coming up in the NorthEast U.S., I take pictures for conference admission.
