Breakfast and Tagging

DSC_0007 – Version 2, originally uploaded by david parmet.

75+ social media and technology mavens crowded into Friend of a Farmer this morning for the latest incarnation of Jeff Pulver’s Social Media Breakfast.

For me personally it was a blast to hear folks from Brooklyn and the Upper West Side moan and bitch about getting downtown so early when I had just driven in from the wilds of Westchester. Take that you roll out of bed and head on over to work types!

Start-up meet Start-up

20071128_0636, originally uploaded by david parmet.

Last night’s MatchUp Camp was by all accounts a success. The room was packed, there was plenty of interesting people to meet and deals to make.

I thought the open structure worked very well. The multi-colored name tags were also a nice touch. On the other hand, there seemed to be a lot of folks there with great ideas but no idea how to implement them. I’m not talking about technology but about basic marketing, identifying and retaining customers and making money. Of course that’s nothing new. The other observation was that the gathering was very heavily skewed male to female. Like 90/10 men to women. As the father of two girls who take to computers like fish to water, I hope there’s a brighter future for women in technology and business than seemed reflected last night.

You can read Allen Stern’s write up here and Michael Galpert’s here. The rest of my photos are here. Kudos to Charlie, Eran, etc., etc. for a great event.

Further signs of life in New York. Last night’s Hatchery event was standing room only.

Update: my write up on the Silicon Alley Insider.

Boy it feels good to say ‘Silicon Alley’ again…

I am glad to see there’s something brewing down in the Big Apple.
