Austin Here I Come

Location in the state of Texas
Image via Wikipedia

I’m a bit late to all the SXSW panel picker self promotion this year, but that doesn’t mean I’m trying for my third trip back to Austin. This year I have two panels up for your kind consideration. Both are a bit of a change for me.

Jocks Online: the Future of Sports Fandom came about from my work with NBC Sports and the USOC on the upcoming Winter Olympic Games. We’ll be covering everything from how bloggers are making the back pages irrelevant to how minor league and amateur athletes are leveling the playing field (pun intended) with big league athletes.

Not Just For Obama: New Media Gets Local was inspired by my involvement in local politics here in Pound Ridge, both as a candidate and as an activist. Noel Hidalgo put me in touch with Julie Blitzer of Advomatic and this panel was born. We’ll be covering how social media tools are being used at the local level.

If any of this interests you at all, or if you just want to give me an excuse to go to Austin next March, please vote!

I Won’t Be At SXSW This Year

No Men's Land

Sorry folks, I won’t be making the trek to Austin for South by Southwest next month.

While you are all twittering, or whatever it is that you kids do, Sue and the kids and me will be in Boston, doing the family get away thing. So enjoy and try not to create any controversies or start any pissing matches without me.

It’s Almost SXSW Time Again

And once again, I’ve got a panel up for selection.

Last year we covered what social media is. So this year we’ve decided to cover what it isn’t. More details are on the panel picker here, so if you like what you see, please give us your vote.

And we’ll do the wave again. Promise!

More good vibes

Forgive me for tooting my own horn here but I’ve never received as much good wuffie for a panel or speaking gig as I have for the panel I moderated last week at SXSW. Here are more good reviews from Tim WalkerSmall Business SurvivalAdam Darowski and That Canadian Girl. Chris Heuer, who participated in the panel, added his own thoughts on the matter here.

In short, don’t sell people crap, don’t try to pretend that people need your crap and don’t, by any means, try to pretend your crap is not crap – because everyone knows crap when they smell it.

Amen.

It’s a wrap

Another SXSW has come and gone.

If you weren’t here, you might have the impression that SXSW was all a pack of rabid twitters, taking down every panel in their path. I wasn’t in the room for the now-infamous Zuckergate incident so I can’t really comment. I found the tone of the week to be warm and friendly. There’s something about the mood of this town that seems to bring out the best in everyone who comes here.

It was great connecting with old friends and meeting new ones, putting faces to Twitter accounts and learning, learning, learning.

Good bye Austin. I can’t wait until next year.
