Yours Truly, Angry Mob*

DSC_0053Last night I was never prouder of my Congressman and of my neighbors. Conversely certain other so-called neighbors scared the willies out of me.

The event went according to plan. Congressman Hall – who the hecklers should have known has a lot of professional experience standing in front of crowds both supportive and hostile – kept his cool, supporters politely applauded and the angry mob snarled.

Some of the highlights included a 15 year old girl being booed, a small business owner being booed and the Congressman being booed when he told the story of his brother’s extended hospital stay and death and concurrent troubles with the family’s insurance plan.

They even booed the mention of Senator Kennedy.

One woman complained that if we provide coverage for the estimated 48 million Americans without insurance there will be long lines at her doctor’s office. The guy in the picture above screamed about all of our problems being the fault of illegal immigrants.

And the best line of the night, from the Congressman himself “…well actually the czars were before communism….”

I suppose I should just avoid these sort of events since all they do is get me aggravated and push me to write angry letters to the editor and blog posts and get me into more trouble. At least that’s what Sue tells me.

E.J. Dionne of the Washington Post has a great perspective on the current fracas coming soon to a Town Hall near you:

But what if our media-created impression of the meetings is wrong? What if the highly publicized screamers represented only a fraction of public opinion? What if most of the town halls were populated by citizens who respectfully but firmly expressed a mixture of support, concern and doubt?

I’m inclined to agree but to add that a significant portion of the screamers are motivated by fear, not by fact. I’ll leave exactly what they are afraid of for others to guess.

More pictures from the event are here. The Journal News article is here. I was interviewed by News12 and I’ll put the story up as soon as it’s on their web site.

*Wow, two Kaiser Chiefs references in one week. They should pay me.

Teabagged

DSC_0068

Now there’s a subject that will do wonders for my SEO.

I spent lunchtime in White Plains, NY where 250, mostly middle-class and mainly older voters, and a handful of fellow merry pranksters, hovered at the intersection of Route 100 and the Bronx River Parkway.

Note to my right-wing brethren – take it from someone who’s attended his share of rallies. You have to start on time. You have to bring a PA system or at least a bullhorn, especially if you are holding a rally between two major highways. Your first speaker should be someone with something more exciting than how New York funds county governments.

But I digress.

Only in America would middle class folk show up in the middle of the day to support tax cuts for individuals who are far wealthier than they will ever be. I’ve always believed that paying taxes, along with voting and attending baseball games is one of those things that we are privileged, as Americans, to be able to do. To support our neighbors, to educate our children, build roads and bridges and a more just society – these things aren’t abstractions but part of who we are and what makes our society work.

Honestly, I found the whole demonstration to be depressing.

My pictures are here. More thoughts on the rally from A Considered Argument.

Complete coverage from the Huffington Post here.

Renewing America

Daddy Obama-cizedPresident Elect Obama (oh, how I love saying that) has asked all Americans to set aside some time tomorrow for some form of community service. So the kids and I will be packing up boxes of canned foods and soups and heading over to Neighbors’ Link of Mount Kisco.

Neighbors’ Link serves the rapidly growing Latino community in Mount Kisco – mainly new immegrants (documented and otherwise) who work in the restaurants and mcmansions of nearby Bedford, Pound Ridge and Katonah.

You can sign up to do something in your community here.

Is It 2009 Yet?

I won’t do the typical predictions for 2009 post that every blogger is legally obliged to do. If you want that, go here.

2008 was both wonderful (the election of Barak Obama, the Giants winning the Super Bowl) and horrible (clients who didn’t understand contracts and needed to be threatened with lawyers). I’ll take the good over the bad any day.

2009 is already shaping up to be in the plus column – I’ve got some leads lined up and it seems if we all keep our heads down we’ll make it through this recession like we made it through the last one, and the one before that.

I’ve been through a few of these and one thing always happens – when things are at their worst is when the best ideas come forth. It was the heart of the early 90s – when we were mired in recession and unemployment and GenX ennui that the Internet boom started. And it was in the midst of the post 9/11 crash that Web2.0 was born.

So what’s coming? I don’t know but I’m betting it will be at least as exciting as that least go round.
